Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
New research suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using these drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
