The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only attempts on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in Everton's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to add to that miserable record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham penalty area.
